This is the thickest oil paint I’ve used in a painting for a long time. The main elements of the light were applied straight away with a palette knife and some of the mid-tones were too, and then after this I used some hogshair brushes to unify the whole image……and then more palette knife […]
Paintings of Dawn and Sunset
A painting based on a smaller sunset study. As soon as the smaller sunset study was completed I wanted to take it further. It was right to stop the earlier one when I did as it felt “finished” but I still knew there was a lot more potential in the image – best realised by […]
Two small sunrise studies recently finished. This is the latest in a series of outdoor paintings of the sunrise viewed from Tayport as the sun’s position during sunrise still keeps moving northwards. As I write this in early June, though – it should stop its northern movement soon and start drifting southwards again. Then I […]
Painting the sunrise currently means getting up at around 3.15am to let me stagger around getting ready and drinking coffee until about 4.30

A study of sunset evolving into a range of red and golden clouds as observed during autumn 2013.
Another unfinished canvas from last year….finished eventually! The second of two canvases blocked out and very quickly painted during a beautiful sunrise in October seen from Broughty Ferry Castle.
A small outdoor oil painting of the time just before the sun rises over the North Sea …as seen from Broughty Castle.
This painting is used for the cover of “Songs for a Summons” – a new book of poetry written by David Guterson (author of “Snow Falling on Cedars”) and published by Lost Horse Press
Painted outdoors overlooking Broughty Ferry beach. Low cloud far away on the horizon and a clear sky above with just a few long strips of high altitude clouds catching ……
I started straight away on this canvas with thick paint and a palette knife mixing small batches of the colour progressions and applying it directly with no preliminary drawing or…
Outdoor painting of sunrise from Broughty Castle. The painting was started outdoors by Broughty Castle and then built up over several weeks in the studio
