This is the thickest oil paint I’ve used in a painting for a long time. The main elements of the light were applied straight away with a palette knife and some of the mid-tones were too, and then after this I used some hogshair brushes to unify the whole image……and then more palette knife again to disturb the unity a bit, just like the real sky! This was a very enjoyable work to paint.
The idea of the sky gazing (in turn) on the person observing it began to develop as I painted.
I love the thought that it might.
Oil paint has a sensuous quality to it that no other paint has, especially when used thickly. It really does have a life of its own which the artist is compelled to work with, not that this is a hardship.
